Appliqué — The Art of Patchwork

Known across regions as Applique, this craft grew from the same instinct as Kantha — nothing wasted, everything reshaped. Scraps of fabric, cut into shapes drawn from memory, were layered and stitched onto a base cloth by hand, turning leftover cotton into motifs of birds, flowers, and folklore. Women worked in quiet corners, piecing together colour and form, each patch secured stitch by stitch until the fabric held a story of its own.

More than repair, appliqué became expression. Without formal training, women translated what they saw around them — the natural world, festival motifs, symbols passed down through generations — onto cloth, each cut-out shape a small act of imagination and memory. It offered a rare space for women to create freely, passing patterns hand to hand rather than through instruction.

Each piece remains distinctly human — no two patches quite identical, no two placements quite the same. What began as necessity became a visual language of its own, still carried forward today in cloth that holds both craft and quiet history.
